Builders Licence Course VIC
Do I need to do a Builders Licence Course to prepare for the VBA?
To get your Builder Registration Victoria you really need to have the relevant experience that the VBA wants. So what do the Victorian Building Authority expect you to have as sufficient experience to get your DB-U?
Simple….. they require a minimum of 3 years’ experience involved in Domestic Building Construction. We remind people that three years is the minimum amount of time and naturally the more experience that you can show the better because this is what gives the VBA confidence in your ability to become a Registered Building Practitioner.
The Portfolio that goes into the VBA with your Application needs to show 3 Domestic Building jobs, preferably 3 house builds that you can claim that you were involved with from start to finish.
Keep in mind that to say you did the bricklaying or the frame or the lock up and fix on the job or that you were head carpenter on site is not sufficient. The VBA want you to be able to say that you were involved in most of the aspects of the building rather that one or two components.
Naturally if you can say you site managed the work then this automatically suggests that you were on site for a good part of the home build and that you were involved and are familiar with the process of Building and Construction.
Builder Licence Victoria
Want your Domestic Builder Unlimited (DBU)? This Licence is the most sought after by most of our clients because this is the only Registration in Victoria to allow you to do just about everything involved in Domestic Building and Construction. The DB-U in Victoria is really the only Licence that you can complete a full house build from ground up.
This licence differs from other Licence Classes because:
(DB-U) Domestic Builder – Unlimited – This class of builder may carry out the domestic work or employ or appoint subbies to perform the work.
Project Manager – Domestic – This Licence Class may not perform any building work but may work under the supervision of a registered builder.
(DB-L) Domestic Builder – Limited – This building practitioner may arrange, manage or perform building work in their specific trade or licence class.
Domestic Builders Registration Course Victoria
For many years there has been ongoing confusion about people doing a Builders Registration Course to get ready for the Victorian Building Authority. So just to be clear if you go to the VBA website it clearly states that …….
The Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) is not a prescribed qualification under the Building Regulations 2018, nor is it recognised as an equivalent qualification under the Building Act 1993.
Here is the link to the FAQs on the VBA website for you to look at for yourself.
So the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) is not prescribed or accepted as a qualification at the VBA however they will consider it as part of its broader assessment of your knowledge and experience.
So what do I need to know to get my Builders Licence at the VBA?

Here’s a simple question for you which puts some perspective on the type of information you would need to know.
How often do you refer to Australian Standards Timber Framing Manual AS1684.4 and your National Construction Code 2019 (NCC) on site? How often do you refer to Acts and Regulations? If you answered never or very rarely then this is why you need to sit our 6 week program to get you ready.
