The VBA is the Authority in Victoria that controls Builder Registration and the process for each Builder is similar for all the classes although to get your DBU and DBL Registrations you will need to demonstrate experience and skills you have in relation to the class of Builder Registration you are applying for.
For example, if you are wanting to apply for a Domestic Builder Unlimited Registration then you would want to have a work history in the industry that demonstrates experience in building and managing work involving the construction of homes and work from the ground up. If your experience in renovating bathrooms then you would not satisfy the VBA for experience to apply for a DBU and this would mean that a better option for your Builder Licence would be DB-L Bathroom, Kitchens, Laundry Renovation.

Step 1: Application to the VBA
This involves completing the Application Form along with a Folder of Portfolio Documents demonstrating your experience and knowledge of the work you have done. Your Application and Portfolio must satisfy the VBA and validate you have the work history to be accepted for the Builder Registration class you are applying for.

Step 2: Examination and Question and Answer Tests

This will generally go for 2 -2.5 hours and a sound knowledge of Australian Standards, the NCC and Legislation is extremely important to get through this step.

Step 3: Interview with the VBA Assessor
Once you pass the testing then you will be contacted either by phone or email to organise a time to have your one on one interview assessment.
The interviews generally go for 1 to 2.5 hours.
The whole interview is designed to establish whether you have the ability and knowledge in the Builder Registration Class that you are applying for. The interview is conducted by an Assessor from the VBA whose aim is to decide that you are a fit and proper person to get your Builders Licence. The interview is not a chat or a casual discussion. The Assessor will over the Interview be throwing many different questions that give you the opportunity to show that you have sufficient knowledge and expertise to be granted your Registration.
Many people in Building and Construction are not experienced with going for interviews, in fact, many people we deal with have never been for an interview so it is very important that you prepare for this part of the process to get the best results.
