going around. In fact, everyone you talk to seems to have a different story!

No.3 STOP listening to the stories about the good old’ days where all you needed to do is have a ten-minute “chat” with an assessor and walk out with a licence. We’ve all heard these types of stories – forget about what used to happen. Getting your Builders Registration is challenging BUT you can do it! With the right information and the right direction, you can get your Builders Licence.
Do I need a builders registration?
If you are going to take on jobs greater than $10,000 (this increased from $5000 on 1/7/2017) either in labour and materials or both you are required to be a Registered Building Practitioner with a Domestic Builder Registration. If you enter into work greater than $16,000 you must provide the client with Domestic Builders Insurance under the terms of the major domestic building contract.
What if I don’t get a builder Licence?
Put simply, you’re breaking the law and you could be prosecuted and fined. The VBA is currently doing random site visits all over Victoria and breaches of legal requirements are dealt with through written warnings, infringement notices and substantial fines. The VBA also seeks criminal prosecutions against individuals who perform building works without being licenced or registered in Victoria. Other reasons for getting registered are the public are becoming more educated about the requirements of builders which means you may be missing out on work as
customers may question your credibility with no Builders Registration.
Also, you may find that you can’t take on the bigger jobs that you’d like because only a registered builder can sign a major Domestic Building Contract. What this means is that every day you’re losing money to operators with a Builder Registration.
