3 Steps To Get a Builders Licence in Victoria
There are 3 main parts to getting your Builders Registration in Victoria.
- Step 1. Complete an Application form from the (Victorian Building Authority) VBA providing your work history and documentation supporting your experience of 3 jobs that you have been involved in
- Step 2. Sit an examination and testing to assess your technical knowledge in Domestic Building Construction. These consist of a written test and a computer-based test.
- Step 3. Attend an Interview with an Assessor from the VBA.
Why do I need a Builders Registration with the VBA in Victoria?
In Victoria, you must legally be a Licenced Builder if you are doing work:
- where the value of work is over $10,000 which includes the labour and the material costs of the job;
- involving a building permit, re-blocking, re-stumping, and removal of a domestic home even if this type of work is under 10,000 dollars;
- which includes two or more types of building work where the cost, inclusive of labour and materials, is greater than $10,000.
If you do perform work without a Builders Licence or enter into a contract as a person that does not hold Registration as a Building Practitioner then you leave yourself at risk of facing infringement notices with breaches according to the Domestic Building Contracts Act 1995 and maximum penalties if found guilty in court.
So be very clear, if you are undertaking building work which is over $10,000 such as a bathroom renovation, then you must apply to the VBA to become a Registered Building Practitioner.
Also, if you are doing work that involves more than one type of construction or building work and the cost of that work is greater than $10,000, you definitely need to get your Builders License.
An example of this would be, if you’re a carpenter and you’re going to take on the tiling and plastering work then you’ll need to be Registered in each of those classes of the work that you are planning to do on the job.
